This course is designed for clinicians to strengthen their capacity in clinical and programmatic management of drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Module 1: Epidemiology and diagnosis

  • Epidemiology of TB/DR-TB and policy
  • TB and DR-TB burden in Kenya
  • Basic concepts of drug-resistance in TB
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Case finding strategies
  • Delivering DR-TB care through person-centered approach

Module 2: Clinical and radiological presentation and Treatment

  • Clinical manifestations of TB
  • Imaging in TB diagnosis
  • Medications used for the treatment of TB
  • DR-TB treatment regimens
  • How to compose an individualized regimen for DR-TB
  • Management of isoniazid resistant TB

Module 3: Management of Adverse Events

  • Introduction to management of adverse events
  • ECG monitoring and management of QT prolongation
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Adverse events: Ototoxicity, optic neuritis, and psychiatric manifestations

Module 4: Co-morbidities and Infection Control

  • HIV/DR-TB co-infection
  • DR-TB in children
  • DR-TB in pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • TB and Diabetes Mellitus
  • TB infection control

At the end of the training, participants:

  • Understand how drug-resistance develops and how it can be prevented
  • Know the latest techniques for diagnosis of DR-TB
  • Can apply the rational approach to treatment of patients with DR-TB
  • Know how to manage DR-TB patients in special situations
  • Can describe how to monitor and manage adverse events
  • Can describe how to ensure efficient and reliable drug supply

Clinicians responsible for TB diagnosis and treatment, NTP managers, laboratory technicians, PMDT focal persons.

The course consists of two weeks of course work: online pre-recorded sessions that you will have to go through by self-study, and five live sessions.
